![]() The current investigation into Mr Pincher was opened on 20 October last year. Six members of parliament are currently under investigation by the parliamentary standards commissioner for alleged breaches of the code of the conduct. We'll have more lines from this through the afternoon - while we're also expecting an UQ in the Commons on NHS strikes. The pair are joined by former US president Bill Clinton and former taoiseach Bertie Ahern at the Agreement 25 conference at Queen's University in Belfast. "We were coming up to the end of the 20th century, the end of the millennium and a new generation taking charge… everything kind of aligned and maybe also the fact we were new in government and hadn't had time to become cynical too." ![]() I was determined for all sorts of reasons to do things and actually as leader of the Opposition I met Bertie Ahern, and I felt when I had a conversation with Bertie there was something that could be done. He says: "John Major (Tory PM, from 1990-97) had tried hard and started a process to make it possible. eventually I think we earned the trust of the parties in Northern Ireland that we were dealing with pretty much across the board, because they knew we'd be straight with them."įormer prime minister Tony Blair says the fact his government were newly in power, and hadn't yet become "cynical", helped his efforts to solve the Troubles with the Good Friday Agreement - which was signed in 1998, a year after he won a landslide after 18 years of Tory rule.įormer US secretary of state Hillary Clinton asks him what made him believe he specifically could tackle the issue. "Bertie had the kind of BS that I always wished I'd had," he says, to laughter from the audience. Mr Clinton describes how he became closer to ex-UK prime minister Tony Blair and Irish PM Bertie Ahern over the issue. "I thought it made all the sense in the world." "Everybody else thought I was crazy," he says, on his propositions over finding a resolution to The Troubles. Mr Clinton tells the the "Agreement 25" conference that "everybody was telling me why I shouldn't do it". The former president has previously hailed his work in Northern Ireland as one of his greatest foreign policy achievements. She asks him how he became "so committed to trying to resolve The Troubles". Still in Belfast, and Hillary Clinton asks husband Bill about his support for the peace process in Northern Ireland. "I know the Number 10 team are collaborating with the commissioner to establish facts and show that everything has been transparent and declared." "So the discrepancy is just simply to balance that out and to balance out the fact that they have different costs. ![]() "Will the minister set out why she considered it necessary to incentivise childminders to sign-up with agencies and what conversations she and the secretary of state (Gillian Keegan) had with the prime minister and the agency in which his wife is a shareholder prior to the Budget?"Įducation minister Claire Coutinho replied: "It's a very simple reason, it's because we subsidise Ofsted for the registration costs - so it costs them about £35, whereas a childminder agency to register a childminder costs them, it can be, £500-plus. Shadow education minister Helen Hayes said: "In the Spring Budget the chancellor announced new incentives for people registering as childminders and a double incentive to register with childminding agencies. In the Commons, Labour has raised questions over the government's childminder proposals in light of prime minister Rishi Sunak's wife holding shares in a childcare agency.
